• Employment is any work performed or services provided (including self-employment) in exchange for money or other benefit or compensation (for example, free room and board in exchange for babysitting). Unauthorized employment is taken very seriously by U.S. immigration officials. Familiarize yourself with your F-1 student employment eligibility options, and always contact ISSS before accepting any work that you are not sure is authorized.

    On-Campus Employment

All F-1 students are allowed to work on campus as soon as they arrive in the United States in F–1 student status to attend The New School. On-campus work must be limited to 20 hours per week while classes are in session but can be full-time during official breaks and vacations. You do not need to get authorization from ISSS before you start an on-campus job.

  • Off-Campus Employment

Curricular practical training (CPT) is an off-campus employment benefit F-1 students have while studying. It must be related to students' field of study, and students must be registered for an internship course. Students in ESL are not eligible for CPT.

Post-completion optional practical training (OPT) is an off-campus employment benefit available to F-1 students. Eligible students can apply to USCIS to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). Keep in mind that all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT. If you would like more information about pre-completion OPT, please contact ISSS. The differences between CPT and OPT are outlined in the following chart.
