Prototyping: An Exhibition in the Cloud at Berlin University of the Arts

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Prototype: Exhibition in the Cloud is an interdisciplinary collaboration between Parsons The New School for Design and the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) which seeks to challenge and reinvent received notions of prototyping, extending its design and industrial origin to encompass artistic imagination. The participating students come from a spectrum of disciplines including Design and Technology, Communication Design, Interactive Design, Fine Arts, Photography and Illustration.

Prototyping is typically the foundation of any design-based practice; this workshop, however, seeks to subvert that tradition by means of a variety of artistic interventions. The project seeks to create a shared learning and production environment, a space for cross-pollination that is truly global, one not tied to a single geographic location. All research and outcomes produced during the project will be uploaded to the cloud and then later downloaded and produced for the exhibition using a variety of devices including rapid prototyping equipment, laser-cutters, hi-end photographic printers, and a variety of variety of other digital and analog means and methods. The content of the show will remain dynamic as the participants continue to upload new versions of their prototypes.

The show is conceived in a way that transcends boundaries, borders, and customs and is meant to be a prototype itself, one that can be copied, reproduced on-demand anywhere in the world. The show has been downloaded and manifested in New York and plans are in the works to be reproduced in Shanghai and Paris later this year.

The opening reception will be held on Friday, January 25, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The exhibit runs from January 29-February 1, 2013.
