Arts In Mind Conversation Series--Mental Health Issues

8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Arts in Mind is a series of conversations with leading figures in the literary, visual, multimedia, and performing arts whose work touches on mental health issues. The first event, Elegies for Our Lost Asylums, features Christopher Payne and Anna Schuleit.

Christopher Payne is a New York City-based photographer who specializes in documenting America’s vanishing architecture and industrial landscape. Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals, which includes an essay by best selling author, Oliver Sacks, is the result of a seven-year exploration of America’s vast and largely abandoned state mental institutions.

Anna Schuleit is a visual artist who has created two large installation projects in abandoned psychiatric institutions: Habeas Corpus (2000) at Northampton State Hospital, and Bloom (2003) at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.

This event is sponsored by the Erikson Institute for Education and Research of the Austen Riggs Center and the Sandor Ferenczi Center at The New School for Social Research
