Policies and Procedures

Services of the University Writing Center (UWC) are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. All sessions start on the hour and are 50 minutes long.

Whenever you come in for tutoring, please bring your assignment sheets and double-spaced copies of the paper you are working on. Tutors do not work with laptops, and the UWC does not provide printing services, so students must print copies of their papers before coming in for their session.

How to Make an Appointment

You can schedule, modify, and cancel appointments online using your student ID number (N#) and New School email address. To make an appointment, select the name of a tutor (see the left-hand side of the screen) and fill in the requested information. For more detailed instructions, download How to Make an Appointment (PDF).

Note: The same e-scheduler is used for all UWC services—writing, math, ESL, and grad—including sessions that meet in the midtown office. When scheduling an appointment, be sure to choose a tutor with the correct designation for the service you are seeking.

You can make as many appointments as you like throughout a semester, but you can only have one appointment on the e-scheduler at a time. Once the time for a scheduled appointment has passed, you can reserve another session. Recurring appointments (see below) do not affect your ability to schedule appointments online.

Walk-In Conferences

In addition to scheduled conferences, tutors are available on a walk-in basis during the UWC’s regular hours. Walk-ins are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, so students who arrive early are more likely to get a session. Students are seen at the beginning of the hour and will not be accommodated later than 20 minutes past the hour. There is no limit to the number of walk-in sessions a student can have.

Cancellations and No-Shows

To cancel an appointment, go to the e-scheduler and click directly on your appointment. Enter your student ID number (N#) and then hit MODIFY. Next, enter your ID number again and choose DELETE. Appointments can be deleted online up to three hours before the start time. (For example, a 10:00 a.m. appointment can be deleted as late as 7:00 a.m. that morning.)

You will receive a No-Show notice by email if

  • You did not show up for the appointment and did not cancel the appointment at least three hours in advance.
  • You arrived more than ten minutes late to the appointment.*

*If a student has not arrived by ten minutes after the start time of an appointment, the session will be canceled and the time will be given away if a student is waiting for a walk-in session.

Students with three no-shows in a semester lose the privilege of scheduling appointments, although they can still use walk-in services.

Confirmation Forms

Faculty members who require students to use the UWC often ask to receive documentation of the conferences. Confirmation forms describe the content of sessions and include the tutor's suggestions and the student's next steps. Confirmation forms should be requested from the tutor at the beginning of the session
