The New School
October 7, 2009

We are writing to let you know that Carol Breckenridge passed away on October 4 after a long struggle with cancer. Carol was an Associate Professor of History at The New School for Social Research and she taught at both NSSR and Eugene Lang College from 2004-2008. She also was a coordinator of the university's efforts in the area of South Asia studies. A graduate of Houghton College, Carol received her PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During her long academic career she taught at Cornell University, University of California at Santa Cruz, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, and Yale University. She was a co-founder, with her husband Arjun Appadurai, and editor of Public Culture, a pioneering academic journal in the areas of globalization and transnational cultural studies. Crossing disciplinary boundaries between anthropology and history in her teaching and writing, Carol edited several books and authored numerous articles on colonialism, religion, society and state in India, and culture theory. Carol was a much admired colleague and a beloved teacher and will be greatly missed by the New School community. Our deepest sympathies go out to Arjun, to their son Alok Appadurai, and to their extended family.
