THE NEW SCHOOL
David E. Van Zandt, President

April 30, 2012

I understand that some New School students may observe May Day tomorrow by participating in a strike in support of economic equality. While the university will remain open throughout the day, I urge everyone who plans to participate to remain safe and to treat others with respect.

One of the most gratifying things about being president of The New School is the certainty that students will act in accordance with their convictions. The New School is dedicated to improving the world through our public engagement and to cultivating creativity, innovation, and critical thinking skills. While I expect students to make up their own minds, I firmly believe that the intellectual and creative work taking place in our classrooms is the best educational foundation for improving justice and encouraging tolerance.

Sincerely,

David
