For nearly a century, The New School has been seen as a crucial site of public discourse. In this tradition, the new University Center will serve as the next great space for socially engaged learning. Beginning in January 2014, we welcome our entire community to learn, listen, and explore in this innovative new building.
On January 24, we kick off a week of opening events, including an Open House for faculty and staff,, a Community Day, when our neighbors will be invited to stroll through the building at leisure, and the 80th anniversary of the University in Exile (see below for details). Our celebration continues throughout the semester with programming that includes the annual Parsons Festival and Fashion Benefit, panels commemorating The New School’s legendary “Race Crisis” lecture series that featured Martin Luther King, Jr., the unveiling of a site-specific work by acclaimed artist Glenn Ligon, and pop-up performances by students from Mannes College and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

In 1933, New School president Alvin Johnson led the formation of the University in Exile, which provided refuge for academics threatened by the rise of fascism in Europe and laid the foundation for the graduate faculty of The New School for Social Research. This daylong event will include a screening of the film Hannah Arendt, and a keynote speech by Samantha Power, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
