Description:
Through intensive fieldwork, this course explores a small urban place or community in New York. Students learn multiple strategies for examining urban spaces such as basketball courts, playgrounds, parks, streets, and neighborhoods. To identify and study the layers of complexity at work in any small urban place, students apply ethnographic, visual, historical, and participatory methods. They consider how these methods can help illuminate issues deemed important by residents. This four-credit course meets for fewer in-class hours than others but requires additional out-of-class activities. The course culminates in a student-produced exhibition that will represent our exploration and analyses to a broader public. This course includes a required online component.
