Description:
In this course we will explore the ways that visual cultures of the African diaspora incorporate and interpret science and technology. We will consider how the schemas and metaphors of science fiction communicate ideas about how societies function and how people operate within them. We will study works of fiction, film, visual art and music and discuss how cultural production in all of these genres use speculations about the future to actually reflect on our past and present.
Students must register for both the lecture and discussion section of this course.
