Description:
Focus on the specific issues facing a director in the development and staging of a new play by a living playwright. Students will be given a manuscript of an unproduced/once produced/re-written play by a professional playwright. Each director will go through a process of preparing for a production of this play, analyzing the play dramaturgically, establishing a relationship witht the playwright, working effectively with a playwright, identifying both beauty, energy and central driving forces of a play as well as the problems and landmines of the play and, in turn, evolving stategies for approaching these issues in their production, Hands on apsects will include: Meeting with thte playwright, in-depth table work, directing a staged reading of the play and, additionally, will mount 2 scenes from the work.

Students who wish to enroll in a graduate theater course at The New School for Drama must be accepted into the graduate theater program as a full-time student.
