Working with community organizations and neighborhood residents, we will start to envision a new urban life and compose economic and design proposals, experiments, and prototypes to achieve various levels of economic and social impact. Environmental and social issues will be explored and urban design analysis undertaken (transportation, location of civic and retail buildings, statistics on neighborhoods, particular site conditions, relationship to other neighborhoods, particular characteristics, etc.). This information will be collated to formulate objective characteristics of the chosen neighborhood. Students will then be asked to identify the critical problems in the neighborhood. Based on the background and historical research and the physical on-the-ground research, students will identify problems ripe for design solutions. Through design research, conceptualization, iterations, and development, students will produce a sustainable and financially viable proposal that the non-profit and the city can implement in their future plans. The design should incorporate, confront, and resolve critical neighborhood issues.
