The Integral City Studio is a collaborative project between the New School Urban Collaborative (Parsons design and Milano Graduate Finance Lab students) and Elsewhere, an experimental, living museum and artist residency program in downtown Greensboro, NC. Over the last decade, downtown Greensboro has experienced community vitalization through grassroots and city-led planning, infrastructure, and urban programming initiatives. Despite a population of 300,000, the downtown has struggled to attract and retain live/work resources, economic diversity, business longevity, and a design sensibility that re-imagines the downtown’s character and strengthens the city’s identity. Since 2003, Elsewhere has pioneered place-based, collaborative projects that lead urban transformation in its South Elm District and support revitalization efforts across the city. In this fast-paced studio, students will travel to Greensboro and use collaborative art and design tools to identify, strengthen, and connect Greensboro’s cultural assets and naturally-occurring community hubs. Public art programming and alternative revenue models will connect cultural organizations; feasibility studies and creative resource investment will grow participation; and design interventions will build urban connectivity between hubs to advance downtown as an integrated destination and home.
