The first of the Program’s Core Studio curriculum, this course introduces students to methods of seeing as they explore multiple modes of photography. Students learn analog capture and various output methods as they develop their technical and analytical skills. Students are encouraged to embrace creative risk as they respond to conceptual and aesthetic challenges, exploring the possibilities of the medium, and refining their craft. The historical and contemporary function of still imagery is introduced as students begin to produce and visualize their work in a broader context. Students also develop research strategies and critical dialogue relating to creative and cultural practices in the field. Weekly photographic assignments, discussions, writing exercises, lectures, field trips, and critiques further the students’ understanding of picture-making possibilities in all areas of photography. This studio course runs in tandem with Core Lab 1.
