Core Studio 4 will offer students an exploration of the institutions that support the field of contemporary fine art practice. It represents the first of the final three core studios that emphasize professional practices in the field (Theory, Practice, and Career) while building upon the first three sections of Core Studio (Cross-Disciplinary Methods), which have emphasized an understanding of the discursive elements and histories that shape individual artistic choices. The most fundamental element of this studio is hands-on on-site engagement with an institution (commercial gallery, non-profit art space, museum, funding agency, arts publishing entity, artist residency program, or production facilitator). Students will select an organization at the beginning of the term that will be their case study. Through an internship, students will explore one organization in-depth, combining their field experience with organizational research, informational interviews, and other modes of inquiry. In class, students will be exposed to the gamut of different types of organizations and initiatives, many of which will be modeled through their peers’ experiences. Students will be supported in their on-site practices with an introduction to skills of self-presentation such as writing a resume. Students will be guided in understanding how thematics, like those they will explore in Core Lab: Topics in 2D/3D/4D, are engaged and supported through curating, programming, critical writing, and granting as well as through individual artist choices and formal strategies.
