This course examines the process of designing a book cover, from reading the material and researching the market to exploring ideas, presenting comps, preparing a final cover, and producing a print-ready jacket mechanical. Students will develop critical reading skills in order to give effective visual form to literature, and will solve design challenges including the illustration of abstract concepts, the combination of type and image, and the packaging of authors or series across multiple covers. In all of our discussions, special emphasis will be placed on the role of books and their covers beyond the realm of graphic design, including issues surrounding the representation of women, people of color, LGBT people, and non-Western people in contemporary culture; the commoditization of literature; and the rapid transformation of the marketplace for books.
