This course is based on a critical reading of two seminal urban theory texts, The Production of Space by Henri Lefebvre and Social Justice & the City by David Harvey. The reading and discussion of both texts will be framed around the conditions of the contemporary urban crisis and its relationship to the capitalist/neoliberal mode of production. The topics of discussion include uneven urban development, gentrification, spatial polarization, citizen displacement, capital accumulation, social and spatial justice, daily life and possible alternative systems of urbanization.
