- Interdisciplinary Visual Arts
In this course, students engage with the invisible world of sound. The soundscape of our immediate urban environment is the starting point for hands-on explorations that include sound mapping, audio interventions, and the creation of sound making-devices that utilize unconventional techniques and materials. Through close listening and an attention to connections that often go unregarded, students begin to work with sound as a material that can be analyzed and sculpted like any other. Students consider the ear as a powerful tool for becoming perceptually sensitive artists and designers, and engage with the way sound can impact their understanding of space, materials and the formation of new ideas. Reading and audio-visual resources for the course are drawn from fields as diverse as experimental music, science, performance art, and urban planning.
