For the first time in world history, more people live in urban rather than rural settlements. The scale, complexity and dynamism of contemporary urbanization and the tendency toward disorder or entropy in contemporary cities is historically unprecedented. This momentous and global transformation has great social, cultural, economic and political implications and numerous causes. In this era of rapid urbanization and globalization, Global Exchange is a laboratory at the intersection of art, architecture, urbanism, social sciences, media design and design & technology with the intention of identifying, studying and testing transdisciplinary and design activist tools, methods and theories to enrich cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural knowledge. Central to the course are collaborative and informal learning experiences with ongoing external partnerships working through a wide range of urban issues within the discourse of non-government organization practice for whom students will develop immediate and practical design solutions. This seminar/studio elective will prototype an open knowledge production framework, where students from various programs can work collaboratively to study and engage with the city as a sensori-motor interface through its various layers and infrastructure.
