Materiality lies at the heart of contemporary design, yet ancient materials and their technologies are frequently overlooked as high performance materials, with varied structural capabilities. With a closer look at the properties of sustainable materials, textiles, and new technology this course will explore history and culture of materials alongside the nature of materials as a quantifiable system. The development of sustainable material technologies requires a more integrated and effective hybridization of the Natural and Indigenous with the New. Here, opportunities will be developed, which allow for a rich diversity of Materials Systems. In this elective course, students will work with both industrially engineered natural composites and readily available everyday materials. Both macro and micro scales will be explored at the capacity of the surface to be formed and structured.
