Description:
In this special fall 2014 session, students will research how death is experienced and visualized in the U.S. and in other cultures, and apply their findings to a variety of projects. These assignments will be resolved using a multi-disciplinary approach that includes character design, graphic novels, toy design, packaging, book making, textile design, environmental installations and more. The class will be part of a collaborative effort between Parsons and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Students from both universities will be engaged in the cultural exchange of ideas through group projects, classroom Skype sessions and a one-week research trip to Rio. The collaboration will culminate in a group exhibition at the end of the semester that will feature all the projects produced in class, as well as a printed catalog. Students can take this course without going on the Rio trip.
