In this course, the student will use words as pictorial subjects, in much the same way one would use a live model, still life, or geometric figuration as the building blocks of a composition. Text, of course, is a unique subject because it is always the vessel of semantic, extra-aesthetic information. With the pictorial as a starting point, the student will explore methods of retro-fitting semantic information to the picture, using color, scale, and composition to advance or subvert the putative textual information in the words or phrases depicted.
