During the Advanced Design Management Summer Intensive, students and faculty collaborate in modeling innovative concepts at the intersection of design and business. This month-long studio course builds on Level 1 by exposing students to the enormous variety of ways that design functions in business contexts, and helps them to understand the roles designers play in creative industries through interactions with business entrepreneurs and design experts based in New York City. Working with a single client throughout the month, the class will apply the lessons of design research, process and strategy. This collaboration with an external partner will allow students to immerse themselves in a professional setting in which they will be exposed to the relevant industry and players, explore business opportunities, develop innovative concepts and propose solutions. Clients may include corporate entities, cultural institutions, non-profit agencies and local small businesses. The focus is on New York City based organisations or those with a strong a New York presence. Project teams will have regular client meetings throughout the month, culminating in a formal presentation to the client. They will tackle issues such as brand expansion, new product or service development, organizational structure and growth and challenges including brand dilution, competition, organizational growing pains and shrinking markets. As in Level 1 intensive, project work will be supplemented by regular field trips, studio visits and guest lectures. The program is ideal for professionals aiming to explore new career paths and opportunities, for recent graduates wanting to acquire experience and build portfolio work, and for current students looking for an immersive work study.
