This senior seminar will explore the relationship between identity construction, design and consumption from Neoclassicism to today. Pulling from disciplines such as American Studies, Design Studies, Visual Culture Studies, Media Studies, Sociology and Fashion Studies, this course will consider the implications of design and consumption on personal and community identity construction in the realms of fashion, interior spaces, traditional media, blogging, social media and the environment. This course will give students the opportunity to research the evolution of identity construction and will culminate in a final research paper which will examine influential designers or designed objects that changed consumption and influenced the relationship of consumption and design with personal or group identity. This course will not only equip students with a historical understanding of design and consumption as well as modernity and identity construction, but it will also challenge ideas regarding the role of the designer in contemporary culture.
Course Open to: Majors Only
Open to: All undergraduate degree students. Pre-requisite(s): first-year university writing course and at least two prior history or methods course in art, media, film, or visual culture. One of these courses should be 3000 level.
