This course will examine the close interactions between technological invention and the production of decorative objects. Attention will be given not just to the particulars of production processes, but to larger cultural changes that accompany technological shifts and how these changes are reflected in material culture. Eschewing a pure technological determinism, the course will consider invention as a product of cultural change as much as cultural is a product of technological change. Topics to be considers may include the development of clocks and clockwork mechanisms, as in automata; the mechanization of work and its critics, such as Ruskin; electrification of the home; plastics and other man-made materials; etc.
