Description:
This course examines a wide variety of venues for writing about fashion. Viewing writing as an essential component of research, we work to develop an understanding of writing as a tool for thinking about and reflecting on fashion, whether in narrative, journalistic, or academic form. Utilizing case studies, guest speakers, and workshop-style writing exercises, this course familiarizes students with writing conventions for numerous media, including academic journals, magazines, newspapers, and blogs. Through an understanding of what makes a given piece of writing effective, developed through in-class activities and independent research, students will work to implement similar techniques in their own written pieces. The goal is for students to develop the tools to find their unique voice and style and to think creatively about fashion writing.
