Open only to honors students in the Riggio Writing & Democracy program, these workshops and meetings formalize the educational aspect of 12th Street, the literary journal of the Riggio Honors Program: Writing and Democracy. This course is only open to students working as editors or readers for 12th Street Journal. Each meeting of the seminar covers an aspect central to the production of a literary journal, including selection, copyediting, and setting a time-line for an issue. Professional journal editors visit the class to relate their experiences, answer questions, and provide further perspective on the editorial process. Students develop practical skills applicable to careers in editing and publishing. All of the Editors for 12th Street will be required to attend three workshops and two meetings over the course of the semester. Readers are also strongly encouraged to attend the workshops and meetings, and in order to get credit, they must attend. The workshops and meetings are led by Rene Steinke, Faculty Advisor to 12th Street and former Editor-in-Chief of The Literary Review.
