While this course is a workshop, in which student work is the primary focus, we also devote a significant amount of time to outside readings. We examine some of the different contemporary “schools” of poetry, and the ways in which poets deal with individualism, mass media, violence, politics, and identity (e.g., race, gender, sexuality). We also consider our own expectations as readers: What if the above themes are difficult to spot in the work (and is difficulty itself an asset or a liability)? Do we, as readers, need to look more closely, not only at the poems, but at the ideas—the poetics—behind them? How is poetry, often described as a “solitary” art form, also “social?” Is the notion that the poet has a societal role even practical, and what factors go into determining such a role? Our readings will include poems and essays by Lyn Hejinian, E.E. Cummings, Charles Bernstein, Eileen Myles, Lucille Clifton, C.D. Wright, George Oppen, Rae Armantrout, Juliana Spahr, Norman Fischer, Claudia Rankine, Steve Evans, and Michael Palmer.
