Description:
This study focuses on teaching the creative writing workshop to a wide variety of populations. We create course proposals, course descriptions, week-by-week syllabi, primary reading lists, and supplemental bibliographies. The seminar prepares the student to teach at all levels including: Undergraduate, Adult Education, High School, Junior High School, Elementary School, and Senior Citizens/Retired Professionals. We also cover teaching specialized populations in Prison, Juvenile Detention, and Adult Rehabilitation. We pay special attention to teaching ESL and foreign language students and to students with special needs. Guest lecturers join us from several organizations that specialize in placing young writers in residencies. And we complete our study with strategizing to teach while traveling to finance travel writing projects and even vacations overseas. Our primary purpose is for the students to be prepared to teach the creative writing workshop in any locale to any population and to assist them in finding their first employment opportunities. Courses are intended for MFA students and otherwise by explicit permission by the director or associate director of the Writing Program.
