In this advanced course we examine late twentieth-century Spanish society through the lens of some key films. Renowned directors – Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar, Icíar Bollaín, Achero Mañas, Alex de la Iglesia and others – will provide us with four essential themes: political and personal violence, border tensions, gender transgression and artistic renewal. Students will practice their language skills by engaging in conversation, readings and a variety of projects that will help reinforce vocabulary, idioms, grammar and listening comprehension. This course counts toward the Gender Studies minor.
