This course explores the diverse world of American song. Major composers studied include Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, and Stephen Sondheim. We examine their lives, their individual stylistic development, and their use of lyrics. The course will use film excerpts to highlight various songs and their composers. Critical and biographical readings provide students with the necessary foundation for classroom discussions.
