We examine the tensions between artistic integrity, economic viability, and stakeholder benefit in arts management. Readings and case studies foster student understanding of the economic and social importance of the arts. Students also acquire practical skills--organizational, financial, strategic, and promotional--applicable to day-to-day and long-term management of nonprofit and commercial ventures in the arts. The backgrounds and interests of the students enrolled help the instructor determine which kinds of arts enterprises to emphasize: for-profit or nonprofit, popular arts or fine arts, performing arts or visual arts.
