This methods course investigates how the design process utilizes research strategies including competitive analysis, market research, visual exploration, and user testing. Students will employ both formative and summative research to guide and evaluate their media design practice. Methods explored include surveys, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, observation, and experiments. We will also work with demographics, psychographics, iterative design, personas, scenarios, and visualization. In the process, we will address such questions as: What is design? What informs design aesthetics? How does design synthesize and contextualize ideas into effective communication? Whether you want to think about how design can get out the vote or reduce crime, establish a brand or motivate interaction, this introduction to design research practices should help you. Each student will develop a design concept to gain insight and expertise in addressing issues of content creation, audience participation, collaboration, appropriate media, delivery methods, prototypes, feedback and alternative design solutions. Case studies, theoretical readings, discussions, guest lectures, and critiques of student work will inform our design approaches.
Course Open to: Majors Only
Prerequisites: Media Practices: Concepts or equivalent experience. While this is not a production course, familiarity with an area of media production is recommended.
