Description:
In this course, students will explore topics such as French hip hop, media, fashion, sports, food, advertising, and street art from the twentieth century to today. We will look at myths, heros and icons of popular France and discuss the status of popular culture vs. high culture in France. Selected texts will include songs, films, articles, and short excerpts from French sociologists such as Barthes, Bourdieu, and De Certeau. Prerequisite: French Advanced 1 or the equivalent.
