Description:
This course provides students the opportunity to conduct an organizational assessment focused on aspects of sustainability within an urban university. The course comprises three major emphases: 1) a review of “sustainable universities” in theory and practice, gained through relevant readings; 2) a study of the organizational assessment and diagnosis process; 3) a collaborative course project to understand the current state of sustainability practices at The New School University (using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability (AASHE) STARS rating tool). Students will focus on an element of the rating (e.g., operations, engagement, academics and planning & administration), possibly as part of a small team (depending in part on class size); will define the current state of specific initiatives within one of these broad areas of the rating; and—drawing upon the review of the “Sustainable Universities” literature and the application of the organizational assessment process—will provide recommendations to advance the universities goals.
