Description:
This course is a critical study of the causes and consequences of economic disparities between white and Black populations in the United States and the effects of social policies designed to address these disparities. It has been nearly 150 years since slavery officially ended and nearly 40 years since civil rights and equal employment opportunity legislation was passed, yet African-Americans still lag far behind whites in virtually every socioeconomic indicator. We investigate the racial disparities revealed by socioeconomic indicators such as education, employment levels, and personal wealth and consider the merits and limitations of various paradigms developed to explain these persistent disparities.
