Description:
This course examines the contemporary critical and often intensely ideological debate over the power, influence, and partisanship of mass media in shaping American culture, politics, and economic and social life. We look at the technological development of mass media in 20th-century societies; the dynamics of mass-oriented propaganda and rhetoric in shaping attitudes, beliefs, and values; broadcast and print media as venues for political empowerment; the use of mass media in dictatorial and democratic regimes; the promotion of the acquisitive-consumptive lifestyle and the mentality of possessive individualism; advertising and public relations; and Web-based forms of persuasion.
