Enrollment limited. This course is an in-depth exploration of the way the unconscious communicates through art. Using didactic and experiential techniques, the class studies elements of art—choice of materials, color, space, form, line, focal points, and symbolism—and the way they are used by the artist. Students learn to distinguish characteristics of different diagnostic categories, identify the developmental level of the artist, and detect indicators of organic problems and sexual abuse in art. Students also become familiar with several assessment tools. The course is particularly useful for clinical practitioners interested in understanding their clients through their artwork. Certificate students must register in person with a certificate registration form signed by the program coordinator. To make an advising appointment, call 212.229.5567 or email
