Description:
This course is a rare opportunity to explore current practices in the visual arts by examining the work of 12 contemporary artists. Themes of discussion include oppression, resistance, and exile (Emily Jacir, Ai Weiwei); race (David Hammons); activism (Paul Chan); labor (Mierle Laderman Ukeles); power dynamics (Santiago Sierra); and humor (Maurizio Cattelan). The class investigates media including photography (Rineke Dijkstra), sculpture (Iman Issa), painting (On Kawara), performance (Andrea Fraser), and organic materials (Wolfgang Laib). Through the work of these 12 artists, we gain an understanding of contemporary art and the way meaning is shaped by an active engagement with the world. This course is a combination of lecture and discussion. Student participation is required.
