Description:
The study of art collecting and curation encompasses art history, history, sociology, and art education. This class focuses on the societal role of museums, especially the display of material culture. Of particular concern is the public experience---the ways museums design for different audiences and the ways objects are experienced within installation designs. The course is organized into four themes: Private Display: Wealth and the Ideology of Taste; Presenting Modern Art; Shifting Values: Challenging Institutions; and The Politics of Display: Design Debates. Several class sessions are held at New York City museums. These on-site sessions will be announced at the first session; some may require addmission fees, which students must pay on their own.
