Description:
In this course, we will review the history and function of Russian art museums, contemporary Russian art and photography, and the contemporary Russian art market in social, cultural and political contexts. Venues such as The Garage Center and Loft Etashe; museums such as The Hermitage, The Museum of Non-Conformist Art, the National Center of Contemporary Art; and cultural institutions from the provinces of greater Russia are covered. We also discuss the role of international funding organizations such as Ford, Carnegie and the Open Society foundations, as well as the role of individual artists from 1970 to present. The class also holds discussions via Skype with colleagues at Russian cultural and/or educational institutions. Original course material is presented, including interviews and artifacts from Russia that have not been available in the United States until now.
