Policy and management in the public and nonprofit sectors exist within a political environment. In this course, our primary but not exclusive focus is on New York City and State in our study of the politics of policy. The lessons we learn are meaningful well beyond New York. The course explores the interplay of power and influence between the mayor, the City Council, the news media, community organizations and the private sector (nonprofit and for-profit). How do policy innovations emerge, evolve and become implementedor blockedin city government? Students examine cases from recent history and in the context of current electoral campaigns, while gaining knowledge of city policy on issues such as welfare, police, housing, drugs and education.
