Description:
This course is a seminar in which we will consider the possibility that some American cities are dying. These are mainly older industrial cities of the eastern and midwestern Great Lakes region, but others, too, exhibit signs of fatal decline. The seminar will first consider the notion of urban death—its possibility, its indicators, its potential outcomes. One way to understand the dying city is to understand its opposite, of course, so we will also explore the factors that make for a vital city (for example, growing immigrant communities) in order to understand the implications of the absence of these factors in our subset of dying places. Then the course will turn to an examination of possible life-saving interventions, including entertainment development strategies, urban university and medical complexes, urban agriculture, and arts and gentrification.
