Drawing on examples from texts by classic reporters like HL Mencken and Joseph Mitchell, New Journalists such as Joan Didion and Tom Wolfe, and contemporary practitioners, students will practice observation, interviewing, research and opinion writing. The emphasis will be on establishing the core principals of journalism amidst a changing media landscape. Students will develop and pitch stories each week; write, photograph and/or video them; and post them on a class blog. The semester will conclude with a longer 'feature' assignment.
