The course will consist of two parts. The first will review the development of Rosanvallon’s democratic theory, from his early writings on the welfare state, through his Guizot book and his trilogy on the history of democracy, to his contemporary writings on “counter-democracy”. Each week we will consider also a work by a related author, in particular Francois Furet, Claude Lefort, Juergen Habermas, and John Rawls. During the second half of the course we will have a mix of student presentations and invited lectures by Nadia Urbinati, Carlos Forment, and Sam Moyn.
Not open to Undergraduate students.
