Description:
In this course, we will explore major sociological analyses of symbolic interaction. The readings will include the work of the school of symbolic interactionism, specifically George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer, but also studies that consider symbolic interaction beyond that specific intellectual tradition, including studies of the arts and sciences, the politics of everyday life, class, social distinctions and social conflict. Special attention will be given to how symbolic interaction occurs within different public and media forms.
