This course will be organized in terms of Claude Lefort's Machiavelli in the Making (Northwestern University Press). We will read Lefort's text and the principle works of Machiavelli: The Prince; The Discourses and some of his shorter works, including the theatrical work. In addition we will read the classical interpretations of Machiavelli: Gramsci's The Modern Prince; Cassirer's The Myth of the State; Strauss Thoughts on Machiavelli; Althusser's essay on Machiavelli. After a number of introductory lectures, students will make in class presentations
