This course will attempt to provide an account of the defining gestures of Theodor W. Adorno’s conception of critical theory, beginning with the central chapters of his and Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment, the opening two chapters of Negative Dialectics, selected essays, and the whole of Aesthetic Theory. We will pay a special attention to Adorno’s governing concepts: identity thinking, non-identity, concept, mimesis, constellation, negative dialectics, etc. Students will need broad familiarity with the thought of Kant and Hegel in order to follow Adorno’s path of argumentation.
