- Musical Analysis
- Music History, Theory & Criticism
Giuseppe Verdi rose from humble beginnings as a youth considered too untalented for conservatory study, to the undisputed master of Italian opera and a guiding force in the Italian Risorgimento. The seminar will trace his musical evolution from the early works incorporating existing practices of Italian opera in the first half of the nineteenth century, to late works in which perfection in every detail is the norm. This will be a general survey with focus on several selected works. Topics will include Verdi and Shakespeare, the Verdi singer, the Exotic Verdi, and non-operatic vocal works. Papers will be required. Permission required from the Assistant Dean's office.
