An exploration of the history and evolution of rock and roll in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s from Buddy Holly to the Beatles, taught within the classical curriculum. We examine the musical roots of rock and roll as a fusion of European and African elements and the emergence of various styles including do-wop, soul, disco, rhythm and blues, psychedelic, punk and fusion. Concentration is on major innovators including Elvis, Dylan, Hendrix and the Beatles with readings and analyses drawn from the substantial and growing body of serious musicological and analytic scholarship addressing popular music. At least one paper will be required. Permission required from the Assistant Dean's office.
