International Student Mentor Program

The International Student Mentor Program assists new international students in adjusting academically, culturally, and socially to the United States and The New School. The mentors are available to answer any questions new students have upon arrival and during their first semester in the United States, giving them a chance to get to know and learn about other students from across the world.

Mentors are international or American students who have been at The New School for at least one semester and are truly committed to learning about new cultures, expanding their worldview, and helping new internationals adjust to life away from home.

Mentees are New School undergraduate or graduate international students, who have come thousands of miles to study, gain insight into a different culture, and share their cultures with others.

Submit your application by email to issevents@newschool.edu, fax it to 212.229.8992 or bring it to 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th floor.

The Conversation Partners Program

The Conversation Partners Program provides opportunities for New School students, faculty, and staff to improve their language and communication skills in a relaxed, non-academic setting. It is a great opportunity for language learners and people who want to learn more about other cultures.

Conversation Partners can be degree and non-degree students, faculty, and staff. Participants are expected to have basic conversation skills in the language to be practiced. Conversation Partners should also be outgoing, social, approachable, and reliable, as well as respectful towards other individuals. Interest in learning and sharing new cultural experiences is essential.

Submit your application by email to issevents@newschool.edu, fax it to (212) 229-8992 or bring it to our office at 79 Fifth Avenue, 5th floor.

International Education Week (IEW)

November 16-20, 2009

Every year, one week in November is dedicated to the celebration of international education. International Student Services participates in this joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for the global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

This week gives international students a chance to share their ideas, food, and culture with American students, faculty, and staff.  Throughout the week, there are special events including a cultural festival, trip to the United Nations, photo contest, and film festival. For information or to volunteer email iew@newschool.edu

International Club

The International Club (IC) was created in 2005 by a joint initiative of International Student Services and international students from different divisions of The New School. Board members are volunteer students devoted to creating a thriving international community within the university and the club has currently close to 200 members.

The IC believes that by exposing students to different activities and culturally diverse interactions we are able to strengthen the international community at The New School and to create awareness about cultural differences and global issues. Its main goal is to establish a welcoming environment for internationals and present them with a home away from home. The IC also aims to act as a bridge organization enabling students to create a network that extends beyond the classroom and academic life. It welcomes all that are interested in sharing experiences with an open mind, internationals and U.S. students alike.

To join the International club, please e-mail: internationalclub@newschool.edu

International Book Club

Informal, yet informative, the International Book Club is an initiative for those interested in literature and diversity. Created during the summer of 2007, the International Book Club has held numerous meetings, which have included readings and discussions of books such as The Shadow of the Pomegranate Tree by Tariq Ali and Blindness by Nobel prize-winner Jose Saramago.

Book club meetings are held approximately once a month in coffee houses and other informal places on and off campus. Its members include students, faculty and staff from all divisions and offices at The New School.
